Homemade Scented Gingerbread Play Dough  is beautifully scented and coloured to mimic freshly baked gingerbread cookies.

The smell of gingerbread is generally associated with Christmas time, making this play dough recipe perfect to introduce to children around this time of the year.  It would also be great to pair with the fairy-tale story about the Gingerbread Man.

The Gingerbread Play Dough Recipe is really easy and inexpensive to make and smells delightful! Kids are going to love making little gingerbread play dough men with this play dough.

Method

  1. Pour all dry ingredients, flour, salt, and cream of tartar, all spice, cinnamon and ground ginger together in a saucepan.
  2. Add water and oil to dry ingredients.
  3. I use a whisk before heating as I find this helps remove the lumps and blends the ingredients well.
  4. Cook over medium heat constantly stirring until it becomes a thick blob.
  5. Then turn out onto a clean surface and knead into a smooth ball. Be careful the play dough will be very hot!
  6. Use a little bit of flour if the play dough is sticky.
  7. Store in a plastic zip lock bag or air tight container.

  1. Hi, just out of curiosity, is this play dough edible?
My 3 year old toddler is always getting into our store brought play dough and eating it. I’d like to try out this recipe out with him in the Christmas holidays but I’m worried the scent will tempt him to eat it. I’ve tried edible play dough with him before and he loves it. He wants to be a chef just like his father and is always pretending to cook and bake with play dough. I think this would be a great Christmas activity to do with him,

    1. The play dough is homemade and is safe if some of it is eaten but I wouldn’t recommend it because it is high in salt content. If you are worried that you 3 year old toddler may eat the play dough, maybe try making some gingerbread cookie dough and use it the same way as play dough. Have fun! 🙂
