Capacity is the maximum amount that something can contain and is a concept introduced in early childhood classrooms.
In the early years, children explore the concept of capacity through a range of hands-on activities using non-standard measurement for capacity.
The Measurement Capacity Mats are a bright, colourful and fun printable activity to engage students to compare and measure (non-standard) the capacity of different size jars.
There are two types of measurement capacity activity mats in the pack; Fill the Jars and Count how many? and Compare Quantities (Full, Half Full and Empty).
The Measurement Capacity Mats are another opportunity for children to manipulate tactile materials to find How many items does each jar hold? and Fill the Jars to Represent how much is shown?
- Great for Maths Learning Centres and small group activities.
- Follow-on activity from whole class capacity measurement activities.
- Great for consolidating measurement concepts (capacity, volume, compare amounts, indirect measure).
- Can be used with a variety of hands-on manipulative tools such connector blocks, buttons and tokens.

Capacity Mats: Identify & Compare How Much Each Jar Holds
The Measurement Capacity Mats includes 8 different pages with jars of varying sizes that involves counting how many objects each container holds. To begin the activity children may make a estimation on how many pompoms the jar can hold.
Children use concrete manipulatives such as pompoms, gems, buttons or small blocks to fill the jar. Each object needs to be placed carefully to fill the space inside the jars and measured using the same object.
Children then count how many objects is took to fill the jars, write the amount on the jar lid using a whiteboard and compare the difference.
Capacity Mats: Compare Quantities (Full, Half Full and Empty)

Children use a range of concrete manipulatives to represent the amount shown on the jar. Each object is placed carefully to fill the space inside the jars.
After children have filled the first jar to represent full and the second jar to represent half full, count the number objects used and write it on the top of the jar lid with a whiteboard marker.
